I cannot believe how many people treat their car like a closet for all of their extra junk. Boxes of shoes, clothes, files, books, it doesn’t matter.
Did you pay thousands of dollars to use your car as a closet? My guess is that you didn’t.
Unnecessary weight in your car kills your gas mileage. With increasing fuel prices, you pay for every pound you put into your car. Take out the extra box of stuff in your trunk and store it somewhere else.
If you are too lazy to take 5 minutes to clean out excess weight from your car you have no one but yourself to blame for wasting money on gas.
For every extra 100 pounds in your car you lose 1-2% fuel efficiency! That small percent adds up year after year. It is such an easy thing to fix yet I know so many people who just keep throwing more and more crap into their trunk and backseat. Don’t fall victim to this habit and just take a minute to clean out your car.
Let’s say you drive 15,000 miles in a year and your car gets 20 miles per gallon on average. If you remove 100 pounds out of your car you could be saving nearly $50 on gas each year. And for what? Taking a few minutes to move some junk out of your car.
Of course this doesn’t mean you should take out your spare tire or emergency kit to try and save some money. If you do that, you will end up paying more for it in the end.
