Can a person stop at a grocery store on the way home from work if driving on a restricted permit?

After years of having his drivers license revoked from a DUI my brother got a special driving permit.

His permit allows him to drive to and from work.

I am relieved because he has expected family members to taxi him around and we are all tired of it. But now I am concerned. HIs permit says it is for driving to work. It does not say anything about going to the store. But he gets tempted to make a few stops on the way home, stopping at a store or a video rental place that is on the way. I am worried he could get in trouble because his permit says it is just for work and we had an argument about it. I don’t want him to take any risks that would get him in trouble, but the thinks if it is on his regular driving route it shouldn’t matter. Does it?
ok I know he’s a jerk. But the question is, would this be a violation of the permit if the place of business is on the very road he takes home from work, at the right time (on the way home from work). We are having a disagreement about weather it is a violation. I need to know if it is.

Only if you are stopping for a six pack.

If he gets stopped coming in or out it’s his butt. If a cop KNOWS he’s a problem and see’s him it’s a problem.

Breaking the law got him here; time to grow up and start obeying the rules.

Sounds like a jerk to me. Maybe you and your family should disown him

Although I understand your frustration, when saying that you and your family are tired of being your brothers’ “taxi”, I also understand that the law says that a provisional permit (like the one your brother carries), only allows the person to drive where the judge has allowed the driver to go. If it says on it that he can only go to home & work and vice-versa, then that is all he is allowed to do with it.

I would suggest that you inform him that it can be taken away again—most likely permanently—if an officer happens to pull him over and find that he’s not supposed to be doing unnecessary stops like that.

I would also remind him that the reason his license was taken away as a punishment to his recklessness, and to not take advantage of it.

If you’d like to prove to him/need more information, I would look at your state’s DMV website for more on that.

In Wisconsin they give you an occupation permit and it only lists your legal hours to drive. Included in those hours are time for church, grocery shopping, counseling /doctors appointments, and child care duties. You have tp specify the hours you want in advance of getting permit. You can only drive about 50 hours per week. But you best not drive outside your hours or be drinking or you’ll lose it, possibly forever.

Depend on what the restrictions are, going to grocery is well within reason. The restrictions should be in a booklet, or papers they gave him .
