This is an easy one–if the motorcycle stalls because the engine is cold, you could get run over and die. Besides safety, a brief warm up will often give you better gas mileage, performance and engine life.
Of course, this all depends on the bike. My Suzuki Burgman 650 is liquid cooled and fuel injected. I’ve ridden this bike in the freezing cold with no warm up period and no problems. The Buell XB12X I recently test rode (air cooled but also fuel injected) needs 1-2 minutes to get up to temperature. That’s standard operating procedure for the Buell and not a defect. Check your manual and keep the shiny side up.
