I have a 1980 yamaha 850 special when I got the bike it would run but when you pull the throttle back it would die. So I cleaned the spark plugs, cleaned the carbs, got a new brain box, put new gas in it, gave it an oil change and charged the battery. Now it wont even run, it sounds like it wants to but then it back fires. Any idea what might be wrong? serious answers please I need this to run its my only means of transportation.

check the timing, also middle head gaskets blew out of those on a regular basis

It sounds like the timing is off.Another thing to check is the idle circuit in the carbs. If it sat awhile they could be gummed up with varnish not letting the engine idle.It wouldn’t want to start like that either.I don’t know how you cleaned the carbs but spraying gumout in the throats won’t fix a clogged idle passage in a carb. They need to be taken apart for that.
