The 1st 3 number/letters are the model
Does it start with DT1-…… or RT1-……..
Look on the head set. Turn the bars to the right and look at the stamped numbers or find a better shop who knows old bikes.
Chances are it is a DT 250. Post a picture if possible
You put DT250 into Google Image search and see if what comes up looks like what you have:

If you’d post the number,,anybody could tell you exactly what the bike is.
Your local Yamaha dealer just doesn’t want to bother.
1973 was a transitional year.
There were 2 bikes
DT2
and
DT3
Both had ID Numbers which began with DT1F-,, followed by a 6 digit serial number
Note>That’s a total of 10 Digits
10 Digit ID’s ran from 1971 thru 1973,,,all beginning with DT1F-
If Your bike has only 9 ,,,it’s not a ‘73
1974 Models were DT250’s.
They had 9 digit ID numbers.,,,which began with 450- followed by 6 digits.
Thats a 9 digit total
450- –prefix was applied to ‘74,’75,’76 DT250
(450- were all Dual Shock bikes)
1M1—-prefix =1977 dt250
(this is 1st Monoshock 250 enduro)
1M1—-prefix = 1978 DT250
2N6—prefix = 1979 DT250
Earlier than ‘73… 9 digits numbers ended in 1970
You’ve Probably got a 450-xxxxxx ,,,a ‘74,’75,’76 DT250.
I doubt You’d mistake a Monoshock as being a ‘73.
But,,I’m just Guessing and have no way to know without any information to go on besides the quantity of digits in the bike’s ID
