Just bought a small Yamaha PW 80 dirt bike and it was riding fine for a few miles. It has been sitting for a couple years in a shed. The bike will start up when a lot of gas is given to the engine only and will only stay running if the throttle is being turned and as soon as you try and shift it into gear the engine cuts off. Sometimes it will go for a little bit but it will inevitably shut off after no more than driving one block. Plzzzzzzzzz help.

Turn the idle up number 1 because it sounds you have it to low at the point where it will just stall out. Secondly check the oil under the seat and make sure theres a decent amount, get a new spark plug as well and put new gas in it , and put some new oil in as well…..and make sure you buy the highest amount of octane gas for it as possible……if its been sitting for 2 years you need to service it and change everything…..i own a PW80 and i have to do all of this after it just sitting through the winter

It sounds like a fuel problem. You need to remove the float bowl from the carb and spray cleaner through the jets and vents. Remove and clean the fuel filter in the tank. Make sure the vent in the gas cap is clear.

The usual way to trouble shoot an engine is 1)ignition 2) fuel/carburetion 3)compression. Since the bike has run some, we’ll rule out 1 and 3 and just go for 2.

First turn the idle up (have one person hold the bike while the other messes with the idle usually in front of the carb). Next take apart and empty out the bottom of the carb if any black stuff is in there get it out. Replace the fuel next and then change the oil. Next change your spark plug out and make sure your fuel is turned to ON, check your fuel lines for cracks and make sure your throttle cable is tight and in good shape. Finally clean out your air filer by removing it and spraying it with an air filter cleaner, rinse and squeeze it with a hose so that the dirt particles come out (you might have a stain thats OK) then spray it with a special filter spray (if you have a paper filter go ahead and replace it). Put it all back together and if it still doesn’t run take it to a yamaha dealer and have them do their magic.

Note: Use Yamaha Dealer recommended materials to fix your bike NOT CHEAP BRAND CRAP
