I personally wouldnt do it cause a car is not made for towing. If he is determined to do it I would check on putting a tranny cooler on it and maybe trailer brakes to help him slow down without buring the brakes off the car.
It probably wouldn’t hurt to have the car’s brakes checked first, as stopping the added weight of the trailer can make the car’s brakes work a lot harder.
I believe the towing capacity of your dad’s Bonneville is somewhere around 3500 lbs. With the proper hitch mounted to the car, as long as the load (combined weight of trailer and contents) is kept below this figure, he should be fine.
