Before jumping to conclusions give the engine a comoression test and see if there are any cylinders that lack compression. If that checks out ok then refill coolant and replsce plugs and see what happens also while engine is running see if there is cloudy steam coming from the exhaust. If so then your head gasket is probably is bad.
well the head gasket is like$ 45.00 but you will also need to replace your timing belt, water pump, belt tensioner , and on top of that have your head serviced , you know valve job and new stem seals, so start saving for a well $ 400.00+ if you do it yourself or close to $1000.00 if you take it to a machanic shop . if you decide to do it yourself please let me know I will be more than happy to guide you on how to do it , it is a bit tricky but not impossible , if you feel resistance on your engine stop cranking the engine , it may have a broken timing belt and this motors have zero valve clearance and you can damage the whole engine very badly . good luck.
