Of course, first the license, then you have to require
or check up the speeding power of the boat.Ask the
department where you apply for the license.
Normally, the police dept. should check the speeding
    power of the boat.
Than you have to find the darsena or the parking
    for the boat.

do you have enough money? boats are very expensive to run and maintain. trailer it or boat slip. sail or power. gas or diesel. size. freshwater or saltwater. ocean or lake. cruiser or open console. outboard inboard or out drive. if inboard, seacooled or closed cooling. winter storage on land? painting the bottom, winterizing the engine. insurance is expensive and in hurricane area may not be available. a 30 foot cruiser with twin engines gets about 2 gallons per mile at cruising speed. slip rental, winter storage. painting and winterizing can cost $5000. or more.

First (unless you are shopping for a new boat AND truck) look in the owners manual of your tow vehicle to find out the maximum towing capacity; recommend staying within 75% of maximum.

Second, decide what you’ll be using the boat for (ocean/lakes/rivers, sailing/fishing/skiing/drugrunning [LOL], etc.), and research the types of boats that are most suitable for that application. If there’s a boat show near you, go and ask lots of questions.

Then, find out who has jurisdiction over the waterways you’ll be boating in, and look on their website for licensing regs (where I live, it’s the Parks and Wildlife Department).

As you now see, there are lots of informed boaters to help you. But to get the best answers, you need to provide a little more information. Are you considering a canoe, which needs nothing in most states. No license, no trailer, almost no maintenance. Or are you thinking a Million dollar yacht, or somewhere in between? Give us some idea of what you might want and we will try to give you more specific help that is not so daunting as some of the other responses. Welcome to boating.
