BMW Motorrad, a division of BMW, manufactures motorcycles.[1]
History
-
Originally an aircraft engine manufacturer in the early 20th century and through World War I, BMW introduced the first motorcycle under its name, the R32, in 1923. Although BMW motorcycles have been long associated with their original engine configuration, the flat-twin or boxer engine, the company today manufactures motorcycles in a variety of engine and riding configurations.
Current production
BMW Motorrad achieved record sales and very good business performance in 2007, with the most popular model being the R1200GS. In 2008, the company introduced the DOHC Boxer HP2 Sport.[2] The award-winning BMW R 1200 RT is the company's most popular touring motorcycle in the United States, and the K 1200 LT is one of the most luxurious touring motorcycles on the market. Current production includes a variety of shaft, chain, and belt driven models from 450 cc to 1200 cc designed for off-road, dual-purpose, sport, and touring activities.
Superbike World Championship
In 2007, BMW Motorrad announced their entry to the 2009 Superbike World Championship season. They are now developing the BMW S1000RR, and on 26 June 2008 signed Spanish rider Ruben Xaus for the factory team.[3][4]
